Dozens of residents of Hassi Messaoud are demonstrating in front of the housing complex of Algerian oil company Sonatrach. Blocking access to the base, which is located near the local airport, the residents say they are fed up with lack of resolution in their housing crisis they are facing. The local housing distribution program has been frozen for over a decade due to a decree that identifies the region as a high-risk zone because of oil activity.
