Algeria’s foreign intelligence chief fired

The head of Algeria’s foreign intelligence agency General Mohamed Bouzit, known as Youcef was dismissed on Thursday, January 7. Bouzit headed the Directorate of Documentation and External Security (DDSE), an intelligence agency that provided assessment on international issues of interest to Algeria, in particular on Libya, Morocco and the Sahel.  His sacking came senior government officials, in particular the high military command having complaining about the lack of due diligence in intelligence assessments the DDSE has been sharing, “putting at risk national security.”

Benin Soldiers Mount Brief Coup Attempt

In the span of a few hours on December 7, a small group of soldiers in Benin, West Africa, moved from night‑time attacks on senior officers’ homes to a televized announcement claiming they had removed President Patrice Talon and suspended the constitution. Forces loyal to the government swiftly retook the national broadcaster and key positions in Cotonou, and authorities now say the coup attempt has been defeated even as some officers remain missing and questions about the mutineers’ support network persist.
