Former Prime Minister Abdelmadjid Tebboune, a close friend to General Gaid Salah, the head of the military, is facing extremely difficult challenges as he tries to convince his bosses in the military (not voters) that he should be Algeria’s next president. For a while, his friendship with Gaid Salah, was for him a guarantee of success. But the General keeps no friends. He trusts no one. And so now, the man who appeared to be the favorite of the military, could lose all his support.  Over the past weeks, there has been a major anti-Tebboune campaign, aimed at discrediting the man close to the old general. In Algeria’s murky and secretive politics, it is very difficult to know who is driving all of this campaign.
