The Algerian protest movement has brought into the fore the divisions pitting the various Islamist movements operating in and outside of the country. Different branches of political Islam interpret the calls for democracy and the rule of law by the Algerian people, and by extension the Sudanese people, through different analyses. Although the Suffis, traditionally tolerant and known for their moderation, are generally in favor of the populations’ demands, ultra-conservative Salafists see those demands as going against religious teachings. On the ground, these currents are reflected through groups, legal and banned, that have been issuing statements and releasing positions.
