Mahariya Arab Rizeigat refers to a clan within the larger Rizeigat tribe, an Arab Muslim nomadic group found mainly in Sudan’s Darfur region and parts of Chad. The Rizeigat are part of the Baggara Arabs, noted for their expertise in camel and cattle herding. The tribe divides into several branches, with the Mahariya being one of the most prominent northern (camel-herding) sub-groups.
Historically, the Rizeigat have played significant roles in the region’s politics, conflicts, and militia activities—including their central role in the Janjaweed and Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The Mahariya branch, to which Hemedti belongs, is known as a key power base within both the broader Rizeigat tribal confederation and the RSF militia leadership.
