Warlord Khalifa Haftar and his patrons of the United Arab Emirates, France, Russia and many others don’t seem to be able to take control of the situation in Libya. Billions of dollars already spent and months of a disorganized offensive against Tripoli that brought a plethora of mercenaries from Sudan and Russia, to French expertise and Chinese drones, have led to nothing.

And it is not getting any better. On May 18, 2020 AFP reported that Haftar’s foes of the unity government said its forces had seized a strategic airbase from groups backing General Haftar. “We proudly announce the liberation of Al-Watiya base,” 140 kilometres (90 miles) southwest of Tripoli, Government of National Accord chief Fayez al-Sarraj said in a statement. Libya Observer said Haftar’s troops fled the base and left behind all their military equipment, weapons and ammunition.
