Italy is asking Morocco to repatriate some 3,500 Moroccan inmates imprisoned in Italian prisons. Among the inmates targeting for deportation, are nearly 2,400 who have already been received court sentences.
A meeting between Italian Minister of Justice Carlo Nordi and his Moroccan counterpart Abdellatif Ouahbi took place on March 2, 2023 in Rome, with the aim of establishing procedures for the transfer of the detainees from Italy to Morocco. In 2014, the two countries have already agreed on a set of rules that would govern an extradition treaty and the repatriation of inmates, but the rules have not been ratified.
