Algeria is confronting one of its most severe wildfire crises in years as an intense heat wave, which began on July 8, has fueled large-scale fires across much of the country’s north. The blazes have spread across a wide geographic area and have continued for an unusually long period, making this a particularly difficult summer for fire crews and affected communities.
According to the Civil Protection service, the country recorded 1,619 fires between the start of the heat wave and Wednesday, July 22. That total includes 538 forest fires and 1,181 fires that damaged agricultural crops, orchards, and haystacks. The pace of the outbreaks remains high: 195 fires were recorded between Tuesday, July 21, and 7 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22.
Although many of the outbreaks have been contained, the emergency is far from over. Authorities said 53 fires were still active, including 18 in the northeastern province of Skikda alone. Firefighting crews continue to battle the remaining blazes with ground teams and aerial support.
Officials have described these blazes as fires of the “sixth generation,” a term used for exceptionally dangerous wildfires that are difficult to control, spread rapidly, and produce extreme heat. In practical terms, that means firefighters are not only dealing with flames over a broad area, but also with fire behavior that intensifies quickly and makes direct suppression much harder.
The scale of the crisis has already taken a heavy human and environmental toll. At least six people have died since the outbreak began, and the fires have caused serious damage to forests, livestock, and agricultural production. The losses are especially significant because the affected areas include both wooded zones and farming land, meaning the destruction is hitting local economies on multiple fronts.
The situation has been worst in northern Algeria, where nearly all provinces have been affected by either the heat wave or the fires, and in some cases both at once. That overlap has complicated emergency response efforts and raised the risk of new outbreaks as dry vegetation, high temperatures, and strong propagation conditions continue to line up.
Fire authorities have mobilized substantial resources to respond, including aircraft capable of dropping water on active fire lines. The government has also maintained a broad emergency posture as it works to protect residents, property, and farmland while trying to bring the remaining fires under control.
What makes this episode stand out is not only its size, but also its duration. Algeria has seen repeated fire seasons before, but the current wave has produced an unusually high number of outbreaks in a short period, suggesting a particularly dangerous mix of heat, dryness, and fire-prone conditions.
For Algeria, the immediate challenge is to extinguish the fires that remain active and reduce the risk of new ones as temperatures stay elevated. The broader lesson is that extreme heat is no longer just a weather story; it is a public safety, agricultural, and emergency management problem unfolding in real time.
