Egypt amended its criminal procedure code in November 2025, rolling out changes framed by officials as efforts to “modernize” the justice system and “improve procedural fairness.” The law requires courts to adopt both traditional and digital notification systems so that legal deadlines are met. Entrances to private homes remain restricted except in emergencies. Judicial review on detention is instituted, and suspects can appeal such orders. Investigators now have seven pretrial alternatives to choose from, including electronic monitoring and travel bans. Reviews of pretrial detentions by the Public Prosecutor must happen every three months instead of just once.
